In the case of Le Gourmand what happened is that there was a large party of people, it looked like some kind of birthday party. Rather than controling the noise level and letting the people in the party know that this is a 4 star restaurant and the other diners expect to be able to eat in peace they choose to let the people be so noisy that my wife got a migrane and I had to use ear plugs. I realize I probably just got unlucky but I hold the restaurant responsible. At these prices they have a responsibility to provide a quality dining experience and they failed. Broke my heart because the food was outstanding! As was the service.

In the case of Salvatore I could buy the argument that my palate simply isn't qualified to judge them. I have eaten there a number of times and tried a few dishes and while I found them to be tasty I can't say I was blown away. But food, like everything else, is very personal.

A couple comments, beyond amazement at your lust for eating out.
1. I entirely agree with your revierw of Le Gourmand, except in the dozens of times I have eaten there I have NEVER noticed any noise. Are you sure you were not waitng in Sambar with some boisterous and pimply yuppies?
2.You praise Salvatore Ristorante, but only say "Straight forward Italian food". Sorry, it is rare and utterly authentic Basilica cuisine, with its heady mix of Greek, North African and Italian flavors, not to mention its reduction sauces. I use Putanesca as my acid test for Italian restaurants, and Salvatore has the best in the US or Italy. Salvatore would thrive anywhere.
